Marcus Lee’s Water Graffiti is the performance of drawing on any surface with a water bottle to create temporary non-permanent visual art.

Cultivated in 2006, Marcus Lee’s Water Graffiti is the art of drawing on any surface with a water bottle. Like using a spray can for graffiti, Water Graffiti acts as a middle ground for having the ability to draw anywhere without permanently damaging private property. As ephemeral time based art, these water drawings fade in time, depending on the surface and the weather. The location and placement of the water drawing plays a huge role with its visibility within the environment and the interaction with the changing motion of the drawing. This process works with the contraction and expansion of water as it soaks through the porous surfaces of concrete, soil, paint, etc. In such examples, Lee uses this process to draw over many layers of evaporating water stains to create longer, solidified drawings. Lee’s act of water graffiti incorporates a performance act that engages the viewers to spectate the drawings as evaporating fragment of time that can only be seen by a handful of people as it completely vanishes.
